Getting Past the Hype

Slowly but surely I am trucking through the Harry Potter series (again).  Actually, that is misleading.  I only made it through 2.5 books the first time.  I got scared.  Hey, I was sensitive?

Yet the time has come where I am no longer (such) a scaredy-cat.  Furthermore, a coworker of mine is in love with the series, and I trust her judgment.  It's hard to relate to a generation of Twilight-lovers and Potter-lovers and Katniss-lovers if I have never read the books myself.  But before I started in, I needed a blank slate.  I had to get past how I heard this series was un-Christian.  And geeky.  I think all readers go through this at some point.  I know that The Hunger Games was talked up as it gained more and more devoted followers, and some people who read the series during/after the hype were severely disappointed.  I didn't want this to happen to me.

As of now, I am able to move through as a first-time reader.  And I must say, while I'm not obsessed with finding the time to read and neglecting my work, I am enjoying the reread.  And moving on from a dystopian world to a fantastical one isn't a bad trade.

  1. Though you know me as one who is not prone to YAL, I was one of those readers who bought each Harry Potter book the first day it was released and had finished it by the same evening. I hope you enjoy the stories on this re-reading adventure of yours. :)
